Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, Peter Thomas started his
first involvement in music behind a set of drums. His initial musical
leanings were towards the rock music of his youth. Gradually, he
began to explore other musical styles and playing opportunities as
his education continued to evolve. While attending junior college,
Peter soon found himself playing in various blues and jazz groups
around the Bay Area in many different venues and settings.
Moving to Los Angeles to earn a degree in ethnomusicology at UCLA,
Peter got the opportunity to play alongside some of LA's finest jazz
figures such as Oscar Brashear, George Bohanon, Roberto Miranda and
legendary guitarist Kenny Burrell. In addition to freelancing around
the Los Angeles area with various jazz outfits, Peter also played
with the rock trio Earshot, pop vocalist Alana Gentry and the popular
West LA jazz/funk group the Septones. Furthermore, Peter lent his
drumming talents to movie soundtracks ("Shafted") and played
in Europe with funk rockers Calicosoul and later with Broadway stars
John Davidson and Pamela Blake.
During this time, Peter also began to become much more involved with
the recording aspect of music. After a short internship at Cherokee
Studios, Peter landed a studio assistant position at Craig
Harris Music working alongside composer/sound designer Craig
Harris (Quincy Jones, "Braveheart"). Moving to Primal
Scream,
Peter oversaw the technical operations of the facility/studio as
well as engineering
spots for clients such as Dodge and Mattel. While at Primal Scream,
he also worked alongside such composers and sound designers as Claude
Letessier (“Thin Red Line”) and Ralph Schuckett (“PokeMan”).
After moving back to the Bay Area, Peter briefly taught Commercial
Music Recording at Foothill College. In addition he began to become
much more involved in private drum set instruction. Joining Studio
Hibiki as the their resident engineer, Peter soon found himself
also managing the recording facility. While at Hibiki, Peter engineered
sessions for various projects and clients. Some notable mentions include
mastering the first WPMA concert DVD (featured artists - INXS, Maxi
Priest and Gloria Gaynor), working with star session musicians such
as Pete Escovedo, Dennis Chambers and Jimmy Degrasso and establishing
Studio Hibiki as a leading Bay Area recording studio. Upon Hibiki closing
its door, Peter moved onto freelancing both as a mixing/recording engineer
and as a drummer. In addition, he also became a Pro Tools certified instructor
at Future
Rhythm. Recently Peter has joined the Guitar Hero audio/note-tracking team at Activision (Underground) where he juggles developing the drum performance aspect of the game as well as the audio production side.
